Ramadan is the month of the Quran, a time when Muslims around the world reconnect with the words of Allah and seek His mercy, guidance and forgiveness. One of the most rewarding goals during this blessed month is completing a Quran Khatm by reading the entire Quran from start to finish.
For many, doing so can be a difficult task, especially with work, family responsibilities and daily life. However, all it takes is the right intention in doing so, along with a simple Quran reading plan for Ramadan. This approach makes completing a Quran Khatm very much achievable for people who want to do so.
Whether you manage to finish the whole Quran in the month or not, what matters is that every verse that you recite brings you closer to your Creator, filling your Ramadan with endless blessings and rewards.
The blessed month of Ramadan has a special connection with the Quran because it is the month in which it was first revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon Him). Allah says,
"The month of Ramadan is that in which was revealed the Quran, a guidance for mankind and clear proofs of guidance and criterion."
[Quran 2:185]
Aside from fasting and refraining from eating and drinking, Ramadan is about serving our hearts with the guidance from Allah. Reading the Quran is one of the greatest ways to reflect and strengthen our faith. By understanding the words and meanings of the Quran, we’re able to develop a closer relationship with Him.
The Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon Him) would revise the Quran with Angel Jibreel (AS) every Ramadan. This alone tells us about the importance of giving attention to the recitation of the Quran during this blessed month.
It has been narrated that the Messenger of Allah (Peace be Upon Him) has said,
"Whoever reads a letter from the Book of Allah will receive one good deed as ten good deeds like it. I do not say that Alif-Lam-Meem is one letter, rather Alif is a letter, Lam is a letter and Meem is a letter."
[Tirmidhi]
It goes without saying that a small amount of reading can carry a large reward, so imagine the blessings you can get from completing an entire Quran Khatm during the most blessed month of the year.
Beyond its rewards, the completion of the Quran can give a believer a sense of achievement and also help them build a habit of reading the words of Allah regularly even after the blessed month passes.
“It will be said to the companion of the Quran: Recite and ascend as you recited in the world! Verily, your rank is determined by the last verse you recite.”
[Tirmidhi]
One of the easiest ways to complete a Quran Khatm is by following a realistic Quran reading plan in Ramadan. The Quran is divided into thirty equal parts, known as juz, and so reading one juz per day will allow you to complete the Quran by the end of the month.
If reading a whole juz in one go is becoming difficult, you can always divide your recitation into smaller sections throughout the day. What works for many is to read the Quran after every prayer. Reading after each of the five daily prayers or before sleeping can make reciting the Quran a lot more manageable. It doesn’t matter if you miss part of your reading one day; you can always catch up on the next juz without feeling discouraged.
The most important thing is consistency. Reading a little every day is often more useful than trying to read a large amount only occasionally. A routine can become a habit, and before you know it, you will be close to completing your Quran Khatm.
Many Muslims have a goal to complete the Quran during Ramadan. It is key to remember, though, that it should never be about simply reaching the final page. Allah encourages the believers to think deeply about His words.
Allah says,
"Then do they not reflect upon the Quran, or are there locks upon their hearts?"
[Quran 47:24]
Understanding what you are reading can make your Quran Khatm a lot more meaningful. It doesn’t matter if Arabic is not your first language; you can always look into reading a trusted English translation of the Quran. This gives you a chance to really appreciate the lessons and guidance found in every chapter.
Spending a few moments reflecting on a verse can also inspire positive changes in your daily life, strengthening your connection with Allah overall.
Many people begin Ramadan with enthusiasm but then tend to find it difficult to keep up with their reading as the month progresses. Busy schedules, tiredness and unexpected responsibilities can all make it harder to stay consistent.
Remember that Allah values sincere effort. If you miss a day's recitation, do not lose hope or give up altogether. Return to your Quran reading plan this Ramadan as soon as you can and continue with a positive attitude.
Try reducing distractions while reading by putting away your phone and finding a quiet place where you can focus. Even ten or fifteen minutes of uninterrupted reading can make a big difference over the course of the month.
The Prophet Muhammad (Peace be Upon Him) said,
"The most beloved deeds to Allah are those that are consistent, even if they are small."
[Bukhari and Muslim]
Ramadan has the opportunity to change someone in a positive manner, allowing one to become kinder, more patient and more generous towards others.
We here at Orphans in Need believe that Ramadan is also a time to give and to support those around the world who are most in need. As we reflect on the Quran's repeated reminders to care for the vulnerable, we must practice putting these teachings into action by helping those facing poverty, hunger and hardship.
Reading the Quran alongside partaking in acts of charity can create a perfect balance between worship and service. It reminds us that faith is not only through worship and prayer, but also through compassion and generosity.
Every page of the Quran brings guidance, comfort and hope. Whether this is your first attempt at completing a Quran Khatm or something you have been aiming to achieve every Ramadan, remember that the intention behind it is, in itself, an act of worship.
We pray to Allah that He makes the Quran the light of our hearts, guides us through its teachings, accepts our efforts during Ramadan and allows us all to complete a blessed Quran Khatm with sincerity and devotion. Ameen.
