What is Qurbani in Islam?

Qurbani is the act of worship which involves sacrificing an animal for the sake of Allah during the time of Eid al-Adha. It takes place in the month of Dhul Hijjah, the 12th and final month of the Islamic calendar. Muslims around the world take part in the tradition of Eid al-Adha Qurbani, reflecting on the values of faith, obedience and compassion.

The story behind Qurbani comes from the story of Prophet Ibrahim (AS), who was commanded by Allah to sacrifice his son, Ismail (AS). This was a test of his faith and submission. Ibrahim (AS) was ready to submit to the command of Allah, showing his trust in Allah. Upon sacrifice, Allah replaced Ismail (AS) with a ram as a reward for both father and son for their devotion. This moment is remembered every year during Qurbani Eid and celebrated in their honour.

The act of Qurbani reminds Muslims of the importance of sacrifice and also to care for others. It is a way to grow closer to Allah, whilst also helping those in need. Giving to a Qurbani appeal donation also allows families who are struggling to enjoy a proper meal during Eid.

Qurbani is the act of offering the sacrifice of an animal to Allah (SWT)

A Sacred Act of Worship in Islam

The word Qurbani means to offer. It links to the sacrifice of an animal during the days of Eid al-Adha. This act is more than just the sacrifice itself, but about the intention behind it. Muslims carry out Qurbani to seek the pleasure of Allah, and to follow the example of Prophet Ibrahim (AS)

So, when is Qurbani Eid 2026? The exact date of Qurbani Eid depends on the sighting of the moon. However, it is expected that Eid al-Adha in 2026 will fall in late May. Qurbani will be carried out after the Eid prayer and continues to be done over the following days. Knowing when to give Qurbani is important so that the sacrifice is completed within the correct timeframe. Any Qurbani given before the Eid prayer or after the evening of the 13th Dhul Hijjah is considered invalid.

Another common question is how much is Qurbani? The cost of Qurbani entirely depends on the country in which it’s carried out and the type of animal chosen. However, through a trusted Qurbani charity, such as Orphans in Need, you can choose an option that fits your budget whilst still fulfilling your obligation. Giving through a reliable charity also ensures that your Qurbani reaches those who need it most.

With stricter rules around sacrifice being set in the UK, performing Qurbani yourself is difficult to do. This is why many people choose to donate their Qurbani through charity. This way, the sacrifice can be carried out in an accurate manner, in the country in which the meat can also be distributed to help families in need.

FAQs

Many often ask if it is compulsory to give Qurbani. The answer to this depends on the school of thought that you follow. The Hanafi School of Thought considers Qurbani to be obligatory, however other Schools of Thought believe it to be a highly recommended Sunnah. All in all, Qurbani is largely significant and is highly encouraged as it brings great reward.
A Qurbani donation is made in the form of a sacrifice, but due to certain regulations around sacrifice in countries such as the UK, many people now give Qurbani online through trusted charities. We here at Orphans in Need accept Qurbani donations in which we use to perform and distribute the meat of an animal in needy communities. Our teams work to ensure every needy family can enjoy a nutritious meal during Qurbani Eid 2026.
The amount you give for Qurbani depends on several factors. First of all, some animals are more expensive than others, with large animals costing more, but also secondly, prices of the sacrifice are different with regards to the countries in which it takes place due to availability and other social factors. How much Qurbani is per person also depends on the type of animal an individual has selected for sacrifice. A share in a large animal might be cheaper than a goat in some countries.
Muslims who perform Qurbani should be financially independent to support themselves and their family’s needs. Anyone in possession of extra income should do Qurbani.

Eid al-Adha is the second of the two Eid celebrations. It falls on the 10th day of Dhul Hijah. Qurbani in 2026 is estimated to begin on 27th May this year and will last for three days. The exact day of Eid al-Adha and Qurbani will however entirely depend on the moon sighting of Dhul Hijah.
