Improving your Spirituality in Ramadan 2026

Ramadan 2026 is fast approaching, with only 6 months to go! As time nears many must be wondering on how to spiritually prepare for Ramadan, and the best ways in getting close to Allah. Orphans in Need has a guide put together on how to improve your Spirituality this Ramadan, so that when the blessed month does arrive you can jump straight in to reap the rewards of this holy month.

Spirituality in Islam is an ultimate journey to attain closeness to your Creator. Spiritual growth derives through consistency, attention and seeking knowledge – all of which are qualities required in the month of Ramadan.

What is Ramadan?

Ramadan is the 9th month in the Islamic calendar where Muslims are commanded by Allah to fast from dawn to sunset, refraining from food and drink during this time. Fasting in this month is known as Sawm, which is the fourth Pillar of Islam.

What are the spiritual benefits of Ramadan?

Ramadan is a period in which Muslims are invited to reset their spiritual and mental state. All followers of Islam are encouraged to make the right intention early to eliminate obstacles that could stand in the way of worship. The aim is to increase devotion and eliminate bad habits.

This beautiful month of devotion fosters great discipline, and believers are also reminded of the suffering of the less fortunate. The month of Ramadan holds an ultimate goal – to gain as many rewards as you can, seek the forgiveness of your Lord, and attain closeness to Allah.

How to Spiritually Prepare for Ramadan

Ramadan and spirituality go hand in hand. Ramadan comes with a level of spiritual dedication. Many find that it’s not the physical aspect of refraining from food and drink which is hard, but the mental capability required to make the most out of this month. For this reason, it is best to not just jump straight in without preparation, but invest in a plan for ways in which you can seek the ultimate closeness to your Lord.

Below are simple steps in which you can spiritually prepare yourselves for the holy month of Ramadan.

Niyyah (intention)

Begin with making the Niyyah (intention) in fasting for the sake of Allah, setting goals for each day.

Build a Connection with Allah

Form a connection with Allah through sincere worship in the month of Ramadan. One of the spiritual benefits of Ramadan is the perfect opportunity to deepen your connection with Allah, through dedicated time for prayer and recitation of the Quran, helping you renew your relationship with your Creator.

Increasing in Quran Recitation

A great way to strengthen your bond and spiritually connect with Allah (SWT) is to recite and reflect on the Words send down by Him. Increasing your recitation will get you into the habit of praying before the month begins, and reading the translation will help you gain insight and depth into the Words of Allah.

Improve Your Prayer

Work on becoming consistent with your five daily prayers and try to also pray all Sunnah prayers after each imposed Salah. Praying your voluntary prayers is also a great way to gain extra rewards, and make up for all those prayers that have been missed.

Make a list of Duas

“Your Lord has proclaimed, ‘Call Upon Me, I will respond to you’” [Quran 40:60]

Making Dua is the best way to speak to Allah. It’s the time to ask for forgiveness and for anything in which your heart desires. Allah has promised to the believer that He will respond to the one who calls Upon Him. Making a list of duas in advance will provide you with readiness to pray to Him.

Practice Dhikr (remembrance of Allah)

Remember Allah in all forms by reciting his names and doing Dhikr. Allah says in the Quran:

“Indeed, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find peace” [Quran 13:28].

It has also been narrated that Prophet Muhammad S.A.W. said:

“Allah has ninety-nine Names, one hundred less one; and he who memorized them all by heart will enter paradise” [Bukhari].

Fast Voluntarily

Fasting once or twice in the weeks leading up to Ramadan is a good way to ease your body into abstaining from food and drink during the daylight hours. It is also a good time to make up for the missed fasts you may have done in the year prior due to any illness or travel.

Reflect On Yourself

Practice kindness, and clear your heart from all evil. Work on forgiving people who have wronged you so that you can enter Ramadan in a pure state with nothing negative sitting in your heart.

Intend to sit for Itikaf

Observing Itikaf is a great way to gain an Islamic spiritual experience. It is a time to achieve spiritual clarity away from the worldly distractions of this life, helping you focus on what pleases Allah. The space in Itikaf is where you get to reflect on your life direction and concentrate on change. Observing Itikaf during the last ten days of Ramadan can also increase your chances of seeking the blessed night of Laylatul Qadr, the night of Decree.

Give Charity

Taste the sweetness of Ramadan by getting into the habit of giving charity. Charity is one of the vital features of Ramadan. Charity on Laylatul Qadr is also a validation of one’s faith which expresses the belief in Allah on the night of Decree. Allah says in the Quran:

“Believe in Allah and His Messenger and spend out of that (wealth) in which He has appointed you as deputies. So, for those of you who have believed and spent (in Allah’s way), there is a big reward.” [Quran 57:7]

There is also increased reward in providing iftar for a fasting person. Our beloved Prophet (PBUH) said:

“Whoever provides iftar for a fasting person, he will have the same reward as him, without anything being diminished from the reward of the fasting person.” [Tirmidhi]
