Building Trust in Allah

“And whoever puts their trust in Allah, then He alone is sufficient for them. Certainly Allah achieves His will. Allah has already set a destiny for everything.’ [Quran 65:3]

What is Tawakkul?

Tawakkul in Islam means to have sincere faith and trust in the Oneness of Allah. As a believer, Muslims are in constant reminder to trust Allah with his timings, affairs and the plans He has for us. Allah loves those who put their trust in Him as it confirms our belief in Him. Trusting in Allah also changes the way we live our lives as we put faith in His control over all things. It is in times of hardship that our faith is most tested. However, through every trial and tribulation, it is important to know that Allah tests the ones he loves.

Allah tests those He loves.

It has been narrated that Prophet Muhammad (Peace be Upon Him), said, When Allah loves a people, He afflicts them with Trial. [Al-Albani]

It has also been said by the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) that “The greatest reward comes with the greatest trial. When Allah loves a people He tests them. Whoever accepts that wins His pleasure but whoever is discontent with that earns His wrath.” [Ibn Majah]

Allah tells us time and time again in the Quran that He will test those who believe and have faith in Him when going through hardship. Believers are also reassured by Allah that through the means of patience and perseverance, ease will follow.

“Verily with hardship comes ease. Indeed, with {that} hardship will be {more} ease.” [Quran 94:5-6]

How to increase your faith and build trust in Allah

Below are a few tips that Orphans in Need have put together for how to increase trust in Allah.

Hold Firm to Your Daily Salah

It is important to reflect on the promise of Allah by performing your five daily prayers. Praying your Salah is a means of direct communication to your Lord, providing comfort to the soul. It is a source to seek guidance from Allah, encouraging the act of reliance on Allah.

Turn to the Quran

Reflecting on the Words of Allah can guide us on the path of Tawakkul. Reading the stories of the Quran helps us apply and relate to scenarios in our own lives. We can further use these as guidance and inspiration.

Make Dua to Allah

“Your Lord has proclaimed, ‘Call upon Me, I will respond.’” [Quran 40:60]

What better way to build trust in Allah than to directly call out to Him. Below are the best duas to recite for building trust in Allah and thanking Him.

Dua to Thank Allah:

Transliteration: “Rabbi awzi’nee an ashkura ni’matakallatee an’amta ‘alayya wa ‘ala walidayya wa an a’mala salihan tardah, wa adkhilnee birahmatika fee ‘ibadikassaliheen” [Quran 27:19]

Translation: “My Lord! Enable me to be grateful for Your favour which You have bestowed upon me and upon my parents and to do righteousness of which You approve. And admit me by Your mercy into [the ranks of] Your righteous servants.”

Dua for Trust in Allah:

Transliteration: ‘HasbiyAllahu Laa-ilaha Illa Huwa Alayhi Tawakkaltu Wa-Huwa Rabbul Arshil Adheem’ [Abu Dawud]

Translation: “Allah is sufficient for me. There is none worthy of worship but Him. I have placed my trust in Him. He is the Lord of the Majestic throne.”

Increase Your Dhikr (Remembrance of Allah)

Increase your remembrance of Allah during times of ease and difficulty. Making a conscious effort to remember Allah allows us to increase our faith and trust in Him.

It has been narrated that Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said “Allah says, “I treat My servant as he hopes that I would treat him. I am with him whenever he remembers Me:

if he thinks of Me, I think of him; if he mentions Me in company, I mention him in an even better company. If he draws near to Me a hand’s span, I draw near to him an arm’s length; and if he draws near to Me an arm’s length, I draw closer by a distance of two outstretched arms nearer to him; and if he comes to Me walking, I go to him running.” [Bukhari and Muslim]

Exercise Patience in Times of Difficulty.

Do people think once they say, ‘We believe’, that they will be left without being out to the test? We certainly tested those before them. And {in this way} Allah will clearly distinguish those who are truthful and whose who are liars. [Quran 29:2-3]

Though it sounds easier to say it than practice it, observing Sabr and Shukr (patience and gratitude) in times of need is to be submitting to the decree of Allah. This form of worship can earn you great reward, as well as build your trust in the Oneness of Allah and His plan.

Allah mentions in the Quran “And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient, Who, when disaster strikes them, say, ‘Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return.’ Those are the ones upon whom are blessings from their Lord and Mercy. And it is those who are the rightly guided. [Quran 2:155-157]

Give Charity

Giving charity welcomes great blessings into your life here and in the hereafter. The means of giving also plays a part in building trust in Allah and His provision. Being charitable carries rewards but also purifies our sins. “Sadaqah extinguishes sin as water extinguishes fire.” [Tirmidhi]
