Qurbani is a form of worship in Islam that reminds the believers of obedience and sacrifice. The word Qurbani comes from the Arabic root, which means to be close, reminding the believer of the desire to be closer to Allah through each action.
Every year, during the day of Eid al-Adha, Muslims offer a Qurbani by sacrificing an animal in their name and then sharing its meat with family, friends, and those in need. It’s important to understand, however, that Qurbani is not only about the act of giving, but also about the deeper meaning and sacrifice of the Prophet Ibrahim (AS) and his devotion to Allah.
The story of Ibrahim (AS) is one of the most powerful examples of faith and trust in Allah. The story tells us of the dream that Prophet Ibrahim (AS) had where Allah commanded him to sacrifice his son, Ismail (AS).
It goes without saying that this command from Allah was a difficult test, as Ibrahim (AS) loved his son so dearly. However, upon sharing the dream with his son, Ismail (AS), both father and son showed great faith and agreed to follow the command of Allah with patience and trust.
Allah describes this moment in the Quran so beautifully:
“‘O my son, indeed I have seen in a dream that I must sacrifice you, so see what you think.’ He said, ‘O my father, do as you are commanded. You will find me, if Allah wills, among the patient.’”
[Quran 37:102]
Many people often ask, why did Ibrahim sacrifice his son? The answer is focused on understanding that this was a test of faith from Allah. It was not about the act itself, but about the trust that Ibrahim (AS) had in Allah.
The sacrifice of Ibrahim (AS) displayed the sense of faith and what it means to truly put your trust in Allah. Ibrahim (AS) was willing to give up what he loved most because of his belief in the wisdom of Allah, and in the moment where he was about to carry out the command of Allah, Allah replaced his son with a ram, showing Ibrahim (AS) that the test had been fulfilled.
‘We called out to him, “O Ibrahim! You have already fulfilled the vision.” Indeed, this is how We reward the good doers. That was truly a revealing test. And We ransomed his son with a great sacrifice, and blessed Ibrahim with honourable mention among later generations.
[Quran 37:103-109]
The sacrifice of Ibrahim teaches the believer about submission, patience and sincerity. It reminds Muslims that Allah does not want hardship to fall on His believers, and that He only tests their faith and intentions.
Allah tells us in the Quran:
“It is neither their meat nor their blood that reaches Allah, but it is your piety that reaches Him.”
[Quran 22:37]
Today, Muslims follow the example of the Prophet Ibrahim (AS) and his sacrifice through giving Qurbani, along with helping those in need by distributing the fresh meat of an animal, all of which strengthens the values of faith and compassion.
Qurbani in Islam continues to be of great significance. It is a Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (Peace be Upon Him) that connects the Muslim Ummah to the legacy of Prophet Ibrahim (AS). By giving Qurbani, believers remember the test of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) and seek to renew their own faith through sacrifice.
It has been narrated that The Prophet Muhammad (Peace be Upon Him) has said regarding Qurbani,
“It is the Sunnah of your father Ibrahim (AS). For every hair of the Qurbani you receive a reward from Allah”
(Tirmidhi)
The story of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) teaches us to trust Allah in every situation and scenario, even when things get difficult. It practices the importance and acts of obedience, faith and sacrifice for a greater purpose, and it reminds us to care for others, especially those who are less fortunate.
Through reflecting on the story of Ibrahim (AS), Muslims can strengthen their own connection with Allah and live a life based on faith, honesty and compassion.
