Why Providing Clean Water is the Best Sadaqah Jariyah

What is Sadaqah Jariyah?

Sadaqah is a voluntary form of charity that holds immense rewards when done with pure intentions for the sake of Allah (SWT). Some examples of Sadaqah are:

• Feeding a hungry person
• Guiding a blind person
• Help an elderly person cross the road
• Removing a harmful thing from the path
• Smiling – it’s sunnah!

Sadaqah Jariyah refers to a charity that has an ongoing positive effect. There are many acts that you can do for Sadaqah Jariyah:

• Donate towards a mosque construction – for every person who prays there, you can get a reward.
• Bring up children – for every good deed they do that you have taught them, you can get the reward.
• Donate a wheelchair or other materials to a hospital to help patients.
• Share and spread knowledge of the religion.
• Build a water well – this sustains communities for a lengthy time.

The Impact of Clean Water as Sadaqah Jariyah

We often take the blessing of having clean drinking water for granted when so many people around the world do not have this privilege. However, with this basic necessity, life becomes so much easier. Water is needed not only for drinking but for crops, cooking, livestock, and cleaning.

Providing water to a person, family, or community is an act of Sadaqah. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was asked: “Which charity is best?” He replied, “[Providing] water”.’ [Abu Dawud]

This is also an act of Sadaqah Jariyah – an ongoing charity. Why? Because providing water in the form of a water well or pump, it can be used continuously.

In addition, you can get a reward for when the water is used. If the water you provide is a means of watering crops that sustain a family or community, this is Sadaqah Jariyah. Equally, if the water provides hydration for people, animals and livestock and saves and improves lives, this is also an act of Sadaqah Jariyah.

Water Well Sadaqah Jariyah

Water wells are a means of providing a village or community with easy access to clean water. This means men, women, and children have improved health and standards of living. While they would previously have had to walk for miles to collect dirty, contaminated water that would likely carry disease, they now have close and easy access to this water.

Even after you pass away, you can reap the rewards of water well. For everyone who uses it, you will get the reward, insha’Allah. This is why many people dedicate wells and water pumps to the deceased, who can also gain reward from it.
