Quotes and Dua for the Month of Safar

Safar is one of the twelve months in the Islamic Lunar Calendar. The Month of Safar takes place after Muharram and before Rabi’ Al-Awwal, making it the second month in the Islamic Lunar Calander. This calendar is also known as the Hijri calendar. The word Safar was named by the Arabs of the pre-Islamic period. The Arabic-derived word translates into “travel” in the English language. This month is not identified as a part of the four sacred months in Islam. Therefore, there is no additional requirement outside the obligatory prayers assigned. However, an increase in supplication will still lead to a greater reward from Allah (SWT).

When is Safar?

The month of Safar will begin when Muharram ends. Depending on your geographical location, Safar will be taking place on Monday, 1 August 2024. We highly recommend seeking advice from your local mosque council for date accuracy.

What Happened in Safar?

There are some important Islamic events that took place in the month of Safar. Here are a few listed below:

  • The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) had fallen severely ill during the Month of Safar. He had migrated from Mecca to Medina to spread the lights of Islam. In spite of his illness, he was able to lead the Muslims in prayer for 11 days before passing away in the following month of Rabi al-Awwal.
  • A couple of battles took place in the month of Safar, including the Battle of Khaybar, which was fought during the year 629 between the Muslims and the Jews. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) defied all expectations during this battle, conquering each fortress effortlessly.
  • The second of the battles that took place in Safar was the Battle of al-Abwa. This was the first military expedition that the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) organised; however, in spite of its name, no actual combat took place.
  • While the battle between Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS) and Yazid didn’t actually take place during Safar, it was during this month that the family of Imam Hussain (AS) were punished for this. This was a painful experience for the Muslim community and was the scene of many important incidents and speeches.
  • In response to these battles, Allah (SWT) ordered Muslims to migrate from Mecca to Medina during this month. This is how the month got its name relating to travel.

What to Do in Safar?

Since Safar isn’t one of the four sacred months, there aren’t any obligations that set it apart from other times of the year. Therefore, Muslims should just continue with their usual prayers; some may continue to fast on Mondays and Thursdays, and it’s always important to reflect on our connection with Allah (SWT).

Additionally, it’s essential that Muslims are charitable all year round to help alleviate hardship across the Ummah. Therefore, Orphans in Need accepts your donations during Safar and the rest of the year.
