Launching a Partnership with United Muslim Relief

Humanitarian NGOs have joined hands to provide more efficient and comprehensive orphan care solutions to thousands of orphaned children around the world.

London (March 24, 2015) – Orphans in Need (OIN – UK) and United Muslim Relief (UMR) signed a partnership agreement today to coordinate efforts on alleviating the plight of orphans internationally. This partnership is intended to merge the resources of both organisations in order to efficiently tackle the developmental obstacles faced by orphaned children around the globe.

Both organisations will collaborate in providing material resources and infrastructure as part of the effort to build sustainable programs devoted to orphans and widows. Together, United Muslim Relief and Orphans in Need will provide comprehensive orphan care in over seven countries. This venture marks a significant turning point for both humanitarian organisations and promises to be the first step in cultivating an international coalition aimed at mitigating the effects of humanitarian and environmental crises on vulnerable children everywhere.

About United Muslim Relief

United Muslim Relief is a registered 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization in the USA. It is one of the fastest-growing NGOs in the United States, with a focus on building humanitarian coalitions to tackle developmental needs.

UMR operate across the globe, including in Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, Sudan, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine and Yemen. They provide aid in the form of emergency medical shipments for refugees and vulnerable groups of people, as well as providing prevention of epidemic outbreaks and treatment of preventable diseases.

Food relief is targeted and concentrated into areas affected by conflict, natural disaster and poverty, and they also provide educational support through vocational courses and psychosocial support with the aim of helping impoverished and vulnerable households become self-sufficient.

On top of this, UMR also provides monthly based cash assistance to orphaned children and families.

UMR was first launched by a group of students at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia who wanted to do something to help the victims of the Haitian earthquake and has now become a respected humanitarian player with an emphasis on health programs.

As well as serving underprivileged communities around the world, UMR has hundreds of dedicated volunteers in the USA who are dedicated to making a positive contribution to American society. Their motto “beyond relief” bears testament to their belief that we must work to empower those most in need and help them attain dignity by giving them the opportunity to lift themselves out of poverty.

About Orphans in Need

Orphans in Need is a British charitable organisation, which was established in order to help some of the world’s most vulnerable and needy people. Like many charities, Orphans in Need is committed to the alleviation of all forms of poverty and deprivation, in all parts of the globe. However, the organisation’s primary focus is on orphans and widows; often the weakest members of any society, and the most affected by the scourge of poverty.

We do this by providing treatment, food, clothes and shelter to widows and orphans. We support them in their community and also in our Orphan Village in Delhi where we support almost 300 children and 40 widowed women.

Currently, Orphans in Need is instigating, running or financing a number of poverty alleviation projects in Asia and Africa. Much of this work is centred on orphans and orphanages, although many programs are designed to help whole communities and areas to ‘lift themselves’ out of the cycle of deprivation.

By joining forces, UMR and OIN-UK can reach and support more orphans internationally, helping to give them the care and resources they need to escape trauma, poverty and conflict and equip them with basic life necessities every person needs, including education. Through this, we can bring children and families out of negative life cycles and help them become self-sufficient and prosperous in the future.

With strict lockdown measures and travel restrictions, it became increasingly difficult to find food or get medication. To make matters worse, schools also had to shut down. So not only were the adults suffering, but so were the children. Although the government began broadcasting educational programmes on national television, the children who had no access to a television either because of where they lived or poverty, missed out on their education. A huge setback for the developmental goals of Bangladesh.

Despite the risks, Bangladesh relaxed its restrictions in an effort to rebuild the economy and improve the livelihood of communities. On the 1st of September, all restrictions on movement were lifted and the economy began its recovery process.

Orphans in Need and Bangladesh

Since we began working in Bangladesh in 2011, we have committed ourselves to bettering the lives of as many orphan and widowed families as possible. We aim to support the country on its journey to becoming a middle-income country and we will continue to help until all the orphans and widows have a better standard of living and fairer opportunities.

Our dream is that one day developing countries like Bangladesh, will not need the help of charitable organisations to function or give the poorest communities what they are entitled to. We will continue our work in these countries until they no longer need us.
