Sponsor an Orphan in India

Devastatingly, orphans in India are struggling with unimaginable struggles every day. Children throughout the country have lost one or both of their parents to anything from disease to poverty, leaving them terrified and vulnerable. Without the parental love and support that children need to thrive, Indian orphans are left with nowhere to turn. For this reason, we ask that you donate to orphans in India to rescue them from the dreaded circumstances of losing their parents.

How Many Orphans Are in India?

It’s estimated that there are around 30 million orphans in India. Today, there are roughly 480 million children in India, meaning that more than six per cent of these children have lost one or both of their parents. Worldwide, it’s estimated that there are 153 million orphans, meaning India accounts for nearly one-fifth of the global orphan population.

Why Are There So Many Orphans in India?

There are many reasons behind the large number of orphans in India, with the primary one being the gruelling adoption process. For instance, many children in India are orphans because their parents are unable to pay for them or the child has escaped a dangerous situation. Half of the population is living in poverty, and this means that children are often abandoned when their parents aren’t able to care for them.

For a child to be eligible for adoption in India, they need to be in an adoptive home or orphanage; however, only 370,000 of the 30 million orphans in India are living in one of these facilities. To make matters more difficult, 91% of the orphanages that the government don’t run aren’t linked to adoption agencies, which makes them practically invisible to the general public.

If it wasn’t already hard enough, adoption is a difficult and discouraging process for prospective parents. The process can take as long as three years with very little support from the services.

This is without mentioning the devastating effects of poverty that leave individuals prone to death from dehydration, starvation, diseases, and more.

Ultimately, poverty is the underpinning factor behind the sheer number of orphans across the country, which is why your donations are so important.

How to Help Orphans in India

Here at Orphans in Need, we’re proud to be one of the charities to help orphans in India. By sponsoring an orphan with us, you’ll help provide them with access to clean water, food, shelter, healthcare, education, and more.

You can donate as little as £30 each month – that’s all it takes to save someone’s life. So, please give what you can to rescue an orphan from the dreaded effects of losing their parents.

For £30 a month – that’s just £1 a day - you can provide priceless support to India orphans and other countries in our Orphan Sponsorship Programme.

We would love to be able to help every child who needs it, but we have to prioritise children based on their current circumstances. Younger children, those with little to no familial support, those with medical care requirements and those without shelter take precedence.

We look at the level of poverty and risk of danger as a key deciding factor. We do not prioritise a certain gender; we base our decision on the level of urgency.

We support orphan children long-term. Our aim is to give each child a good education that will open up access to job opportunities, with the end goal being that the child grows up to become self-sufficient and capable of supporting themselves. We will not end sponsorship and care until we are certain that the orphan is stable and no longer requires our help.
Sponsorship can be ended early if circumstances change. Sometimes, a relative of the orphan may come forward and offer to take guardianship. If we feel like the orphan will have good access to decent shelter, education, food, clothes and – most importantly – emotional care and love, we will end the sponsorship.

Alternatively, orphans can be adopted. In this case, we carefully and extensively assess their potential new home and parents to ensure their key needs are met before we end the sponsorship.

We currently work with orphans in Gaza and 12 other locations: Somalia, The Gambia, Kenya, Nepal, Mali, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Pakistan, India, Kashmir, Sierra Leone and Senegal.

We have extensive teams in all these locations, which make it possible for you to sponsor a child from the UK and make a difference around the globe.

We operate one of the best child sponsorship programmes because our focus is always on the children. We provide support to those who so desperately need it 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.

Our 10+ years of experience have seen so many positive results from the orphans we’ve been able to help. Our dedicated team take on parental roles and gives constant and full attention to the children in our care. Our teams in the UK and our ELD countries work together to deliver the best and most comprehensive care.

We operate solely to help orphans and so do not run other aid programmes or emergency responses. This allows us to focus all our attention on the children who need us and give them all the resources we can to help them prosper.
