Dhul Hijjah is the twelfth and the last month of the Islamic calendar. It is one of the sacred months in Islam and contains the most blessed days in the sight of Allah (SWT). In a hadith, the Prophet (SAW) said:
“The year is twelve months, of which four are sacred: three consecutive months, Dhul-Qadah, Dhul-Hijjah and al-Muharram, and Rajab Mudar which comes between Jumada and Sha’ban.” [Bukhari 4662]
The sacred months have a special significance in Islam. Fighting and immoral deeds are prohibited during these months. Dhul Hijjah is also important because of the Hajj pilgrimage, which takes place in the beginning of this month. According to authentic hadith, the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah have been granted great virtue. The Prophet (SAW) said:
“There are no days in which righteous deeds are more beloved to Allah than these ten days.” [Bukhari, 2/457]
According to another hadith:
“There is no deed more precious in the sight of Allah, nor greater in reward, than a good deed done during the ten days of Sacrifice.” [al-Darimi, 1/357]
1st Dhul Hijjah:
1st Dhul Hijjah is important because of being the first day of the month. It marks the beginning of the most blessed days of the year.
8th Dhul Hijjah:
The Hajj pilgrims put on Ihram and leave for Mina to perform Hajj. This formally marks the beginning of important Hajj rituals.
9th Dhul Hijjah:
Known as the day of Arafah, 9th Dhul Hijjah contains huge blessings. Allah (SWT) perfected the religion on this virtuous day. According to a report by Umar (RA), the last verse of the Quran was revealed to Prophet Muhammad (SAW) on this day.
“This day I have perfected your religion for you, completed My favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion.” [al-Maidah 5:3]
In addition to that, fasting on the day of Arafah is a means of the expiation of two years’ sins according to a hadith of the Prophet (SAW).
“It expiates for the sins of the previous year and of the coming year.” [Muslim]
10th Dhul Hijjah:
The 10th of the month marks the beginning of three-day celebration of Eid-al-Adha. This is also the first day of sacrifice and a sacred time of the year, as indicated by the following hadith.
“The greatest of days before Allah is the Day of Sacrifice.” [Sahih Abi Dawud]
11th, 12th, and 13th Dhul Hijjah:
These are the remaining days of sacrifice and the days of Tashriq. It is highly recommended to engage in the remembrance of Allah (SWT) and show gratefulness to Him during this time. The Prophet (SAW) said:
“The day of Arafah, the day of Sacrifice, and the days of al-Tashriq are our festival, us Muslims, and they are days of eating and drinking.” [Tirmidhi, 773]
Like all other Islamic months, Dhul Hijjah follows the cycles of the moon. As the lunar year is shorter than the solar calendar, the key Dhul Hijjah dates change every year by ten days. Moonsighting has a great significance in determining the important dates for Hajj and Eid al-Adha, as mentioned in the following verse.
“They ask you, [O Muhammad], about the crescent moons. Say, ‘They are measurements of time for the people and for Hajj [pilgrimage]’.” [2:189]
This year, Dhul Hijjah is expected to coincide with the month of June. It is easier to find out what month Dhul Hijjah is in 2024 rather than the exact dates. The actual dates for Hajj and Eid al-Adha are decided after the official moonsighting.
In 2024, 1st Dhul Hijjah is expected to fall on 7or 8 June, depending on the new moon. The blessed month begins with official announcements by the government in Muslim countries. In the UK, mosque committees will decide when Dhul Hijjah starts in 2024. You can find updated information about Dhul Hijjah dates closer to the time.
The first day of Dhul Hijjah is estimated to be Friday, 7 June, or Saturday, 8 June, subject to the sighting of the crescent moon.
The Eid in Dhul Hijjah is celebrated on 10th of the month. Eid al-Adha 2024 is expected to fall around Sunday, 16 June, or Monday, 17 June in the UK.
Qurbani is offered between 10th and 12th Dhul Hijjah, which are the days of Eid. The valid time for Qurbani starts after Eid prayers on the first day of Eid. Qurbani is the most important act of worship to be performed during the noble days of Dhul Hijjah. You can give your Qurbani with Orphans in Need this year and help feed orphans and widows in areas suffering from food poverty. Our Qurbani packages start from as little as £25. Donate your Qurbani online and secure the blessing of Dhul Hijjah by helping vulnerable individuals of the Ummah.
