Sponsor an Orphan in Africa

The devastating truth is that in Africa, orphans are facing unimaginable hardships on a daily basis. Conflict, disease, and poverty are just some of the awful reasons behind children across the continent losing one or both of their parents. It goes without saying that orphans are the most vulnerable members of our society, lacking the parental love and support that children need to thrive. For this reason, we established our Orphan Support Africa Appeal, allowing you to make the change that these helpless children need.

How Many Orphans Are There in Africa?

It’s estimated that there are as many as 52 million orphans across Africa. Currently, there are over 400 million children living in Africa, meaning as many as 13 per cent of these children have lost one or both of their parents. In the entire world, it’s estimated that there are 153 million orphans, meaning Africa’s orphans make up more than a third of the entire orphan population.

Why Are There So Many Orphans in Africa?

Africa is the poorest continent in the world, and it’s these impacts of poverty that have resulted in so many deaths. For instance, the lack of funding for healthcare in Africa’s developing regions has left many with diseases that have ultimately killed them.

Roughly 32 per cent of orphans in Africa have lost one or both of their parents to AIDS, with many of the children suffering from the disease, too. AIDS continues to be a major epidemic in Africa, and the number of those affected is increasing rather than declining.

The Ebola epidemic was also responsible for taking the lives of thousands of parents, leaving behind almost 4,000 orphaned children.

In many African regions, families don’t have access to clean water. As a result, they either find themselves dying from dehydration or waterborne diseases from drinking dirty water. This is without mentioning the lack of access to food, which can leave many starving to death.

Poverty underpins all this devastation, which is why your donations are so vital.

How to Help Orphans in Africa

You can help orphans in Africa by sponsoring an orphan with Orphans in Need. Your sponsorship funds will go towards providing orphans with access to clean water, food, shelter, healthcare, education, and more.

Monthly donations to sponsor an orphan start from as little as £30 – while it may not seem like a lot to us, it can be life-changing to someone in need. So, please give what you can to rescue an orphan from the dreaded cycle of poverty.

For £30 a month – that’s just £1 a day - you can provide priceless support to Africa orphans and other countries in our Orphan Sponsorship Programme.

We would love to be able to help every child who needs it, but we have to prioritise children based on their current circumstances. Younger children, those with little to no familial support, those with medical care requirements and those without shelter take precedence.

We look at the level of poverty and risk of danger as a key deciding factor. We do not prioritise a certain gender; we base our decision on the level of urgency.

We support orphan children long-term. Our aim is to give each child a good education that will open up access to job opportunities, with the end goal being that the child grows up to become self-sufficient and capable of supporting themselves. We will not end sponsorship and care until we are certain that the orphan is stable and no longer requires our help.
Sponsorship can be ended early if circumstances change. Sometimes, a relative of the orphan may come forward and offer to take guardianship. If we feel like the orphan will have good access to decent shelter, education, food, clothes and – most importantly – emotional care and love, we will end the sponsorship.

Alternatively, orphans can be adopted. In this case, we carefully and extensively assess their potential new home and parents to ensure their key needs are met before we end the sponsorship.

We currently work with orphans in Gaza and 12 other locations: Somalia, The Gambia, Kenya, Nepal, Mali, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Pakistan, India, Kashmir, Sierra Leone and Senegal.

We have extensive teams in all these locations, which make it possible for you to sponsor a child from the UK and make a difference around the globe.

We operate one of the best child sponsorship programmes because our focus is always on the children. We provide support to those who so desperately need it 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.

Our 10+ years of experience have seen so many positive results from the orphans we’ve been able to help. Our dedicated team take on parental roles and gives constant and full attention to the children in our care. Our teams in the UK and our ELD countries work together to deliver the best and most comprehensive care.

We operate solely to help orphans and so do not run other aid programmes or emergency responses. This allows us to focus all our attention on the children who need us and give them all the resources we can to help them prosper.
